Mixed Feelings

Mixed Feelings is a project that documents my attempt to reconnect with my parents by learning their languages before it's too late. The project explores the intersection of language, diaspora, and mixed-race identity.

When his dad's health starts deteriorating, Fox must learn Japanese to connect with his father before it’s too late. As Fox's communication skills improve, his father's health worsens. 

Realizing that to learn the language of only one parent would be to ignore half the family's history. Fox begins researching Spanglish as a symbol of how languages and families evolve as they migrate through time and space. 

Mixed Feelings is an intimate story about trying to hold onto language and family when they've become distant from the lives we live.
